The SD38 is a somewhat unique locomotive, only 38 were sold by EMD. The unit is a 16 cylinder, 2,000 h.p. locomotive with a DC generator riding on 3 axles. These units were purchased by the Detroit, Toledo & Ironton for use in hump service, and have continued that service with the Grand Trunk Western after acquiring the DT&I.
